Insomnia!

Do you find it difficult to get to sleep? Or do you wake ininsomnia the middle of the night and lie awake for hours? In NSW 1 in 5 are chronically sleep deprived. Not having enough sleep affects us on so many levels – our work, relationships, quality of life.

There are many reasons for insomnia including:
1. Stress
2. Hormones eg hot flushes
3. Poor diet, too many stimulants and nutrient deficiencies
4. Emotional causes such as anxiety and depression
5. Poor sleep habits such as irregular schedules
6. Medical conditions such as arthritis, reflux, overactive thyroid

A common cause I see in practice is stress. By calming the nervous system and bringing the adrenal glands into balance, sleep can be improved. There are many calming and sedative herbal medicines that I use and these herbs aren’t addictive like some sleeping tablets. They also don’t make you feel sluggish in the morning. Sedative herbs can be used with adrenal herbs (called adaptogens) which help the body to respond more appropriately to stress.
