Probiotics could be the new yoga for those needing stress management techniques.
Researchers in Ireland conducted studies on the effect of a probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus), on behavioural responses to stress. When placed in a stressful situation, the group of people taking the probiotics displayed less anxiety and released less stress hormones!
When looking into how the probiotics were able to modulates stress and anxiety the researchers found L. rhamnosus increased the number of GABA (a calming neurotransmitter) receptors in the brain in areas associated with memory and the regulation of emotion, similar to what is seen with the use of anti-anxiety medications!
