Anxiety and Panic Disorders

Science suggests that people who are prone to anxiety may have too many or too few neurotransmitters in the brain. Neuro-transmitters, such as gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Serotonin, are thought to be low in Anxiety and Panic Disorders.

So what can we do to help these neurotransmitters?  Herbal medicine and certain nutrients can balance our neurotransmitters.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) has been found to be as effective as oxazepam (a benzodiazepine drug) for generalised anxiety disorder but without the impairment of job performance that is found with the drug.

Research on Kava (Piper methysticum) has found this herb to be highly effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression.  Kava is also excellent for the withdrawal from benzodiazepines.

A study on the herb, Zizyphus (Zizyphus spinosa), has found it significantly improved mood, decreased anxiety and improved sleep quality without side effects.  It is also used to prevent night sweats.

As Serotonin is produced both in the brain and the gut, gut health is of great importance.  Also you need quality protein in the diet, Zinc, Potassium and Magnesium for healthy neurotransmitter balance and function.  Homeopathy is also brilliant for the treatment of anxiety and panic disorders and can be taken while taking medication.
