Have your say on the Government’s decision to take natural therapies off the health funds

The government is undertaking a consultation process regarding the abolition of government rebates for natural therapies from private health insurance. Now is the time to influence this outcome!

Without action, from 1st April 2019 the government will remove the private health insurance rebate from private health insurance providers after a visit to an accredited Naturopath.

As you probably know, Naturopaths emphasise preventative health, nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and the importance of taking personal responsibility for health as a fundamental principle for improving the quality of life.

Natural therapies are recognised by the World Health Organization and by governments around the world as effective, appropriate and cost-effective solutions to helping people manage their own healthcare.

An analysis carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that members across all levels of hospital cover, who also choose ancillary benefits for natural therapies, claim $200 less, per person, every year in hospital and medical costs.  For members with top hospital cover it was $430 less, per person, claimed for those also choosing ancillary benefits for natural therapies.

Ceasing the private health rebate for natural therapies, such as herbal medicine and naturopathy, should be reconsidered in light of both consumer demand and the evidence supporting the use of these natural therapies.
